My candidacy for a third term as Judge in Harris County Probate Court No. 4 is official.
After practicing law for over 40 years, my practice revolved around helping my clients make estate planning decisions, the creation of guardianships and the probate of loved ones, and securing necessary mental health assistance. In November of 2018, I was elected as the judge of Harris County Probate Court # 4 whereupon I took the bench on January 1, 2019. In 2020 life dealt all of us the sudden shock of COVID. We innovated. We persevered.
In November of 2022 the voters in Harris County, Texas re-elected me for a second four-year term which began on January 1, 2023. While the events and memories of COVID slowly fade in time, the scars and worries of such health issues remain. I wish to extend my best wishes and deepest condolences for the loss of loved ones throughout the course of the COVID pandemic.
We don’t ever get the time back from such events. We just have the time forward. It is in that vein that I am running once again for re-election for my third term as the presiding judge for Harris County Probate Court No. 4.
The Court I am privileged over which to preside is a probate court. It, sadly, deals day in and day out with matters of life and death. Our Court continues to work including working remotely weekly allowing individuals with uncontested matters to appear by zoom avoiding the unnecessary trip to the downtown courthouse in person. We have held thousands of hearings via Zoom. Parties have zoomed to court for our routine dockets and for our most complex evidentiary hearings alike. As judge in Harris County Probate Court No. 4. Additionally, while parties and their attorneys have zoomed into our court dockets, other individuals appear in person in the courtroom in hybrid situations utilizing our court's advanced technology systems, and our Court will continue to utilize these systems well into the future. While our County Probate Court also conducts in-person litigated matters including jury trials, because of our County Probate Court's unique concurrent jurisdiction with certain District Court matters, in addition to normal county level six-person jury trials, this court also conducts twelve-person jury trials regularly.
Additionally, this Court is authorized as only one of two courts in Harris County, Texas to conduct mental health commitment and forced medication hearings. As a way to help in understanding the entirety of Harris County Probate Court No. 4 caseload, there were over 16,000 mental health commitments in 2024 in Harris County, Texas.
Harris County is the third most populous county in the United State with nearly the largest probate dockets in the United States. Harris County needs steady and experienced hands to navigate the issues of probate today and into the future as was done earlier in this decade. I also want to continue to publicize the work that our Court accomplishes throughout Harris County, Texas. It has been my honor to serve on the Bench since January 2019. I’d like to continue for a third term, and I would like your assistance in doing so.
